Younger children need lots of handholding and supervision when near the road and even children as old as 11 can struggle to judge speeds and distances of cars as accurately as an adult can. It may be difficult for drivers to see them because they are small and difficult for the child to see over the car.

It is recommended that children start to learn about the Green Cross Code when they around 7 years old.

Think = Find a safe place to cross the road

Stop = Stop and stand on the pavement near the kerb.

Look = Look all around you for cars, bicycles, and motorbikes etc.

Listen = Listen for cars that you cannot see

Wait = Wait for any traffic to pass

Look and listen again = When it is safe and there is no traffic, walk straight across the road

Arrive Alive = Look and keep looking whilst crossing the road
